Fashion Theatre Designer Profiles
AHYOUNG CHOI
Korean-born designer, Ahyoung Choi recently graduated from Central St. Martins Fashion design Womenswear with First class BA honours degree. In 2006, after graduated Bachelor degree in Clothing and Textiles at Seoul National University, South Korea, she decided to move to London to focusing on fashion design at Central St. Martins.
She has gained experience interning for luxury fashion houses such as Celine, Vivienne Westwood, Hussein Chalayan and Christopher Kane.
Ahyoung Choi’s graduate collection ‘Concealed Ballerina’ was inspired by artists Christo & Jeanne-Claude. Architecture-influenced shapes are weird, strong but soft and feminine at the same time.
ARA JO
Ara Jo graduated with a BA ‘Fashion Design Womenswear’ from Central Saint Martins in 2009, she is now a London based designer and has been working her own label “Ara Jo” since her graduate and also works as a freelance fashion designer as she collaborates with many artists and celebrities including Lady GaGa, Solagne Knowles and Leona Lewis.
Ara is obsessed by mysterious creatures such as fairy tales and really into using those beautiful objects as muses for her collection, showing her craziness and fun side but with her own feminine touch. Ara Jo’s collection is for women who want to feel confident and express their seduction.
BRITT BEALE
Britt Beale is a vintage inspired label, devoted to creating pieces with everlasting appeal.
The brand takes influence from the most unlikely and disheveled characters, focusing on the way pieces can be put together in a frivolous yet coherent manner; it’s about creating accidental fashion.
The collections are often based around a bygone era in order to create clothing with a sense of heritage, and an element of British eccentricity. Britt seeks to create pieces that are playful, humorous, and fun and subtly stand out from the crowd.

CAROLE GOULD
Featured in Vogue Italia, quaterly magazine Fashion Music Style,and Gill Wing’s Jewellery Week 2010, Carole Gould’s capsule collection encompasses outstanding costume jewellery pieces.
Using materials shed by animals, Carole creates ethically made, one-off adornment pieces such asher crystal, snakeskin bangles.
The exploration of cast off materials also led her to source feathers that had been discarded from a game farm, giving these birds a new lease of life by using their feathers in her pieces. Her first collection breathes life back into materials that would otherwise be discarded whilst paying homage to the animals that provided them.
CARLA DANIELLE KNIGHT
Carla Knight produces menswear clothing with unisex tailoring and a passion for the edgy and the awkward.
Although constantly looking into the unknown and the disturbing for inspiration, Carla still uses traditional techniques and silhouettes to create contortions and dissections of the original ideas.
Carla is currently developing a capsule shirt collection for an Italian company.
CRYSTAL McFARLANE
Young menswear designer Crystal McFarlane was born and is now based in London. A recent graduate from the University of Westminster, her spring collection “Am I not a man like other men” looks at armory dating back to Henry VIII.
Crystal’s aim was to create timeless pieces that you could fall in love with, captivating craftsmanship, dedication, and intricacy enabling the wearer to create a mystery and unrivalled masculinity all of their own.
Crystal is currently freelancing for a range of successful brands, while developing and building her own empire.
FRANCES CONTEH
An MA graduate from the Royal College of Art, the Bauhaus movement was the inspiration for the Frances Conteh SS/11 collection. Referencing the contrasting colours from the movement, the kinetic energy of Kandinsky and Gunta Stozl's geometric patterned textiles played a big part in the shape of the silhouettes, creating a collection of bold, sophisticated and graphic knitwear.
Frances' designs are produced using a variety of luxury silks, cashwool and Mohair and this is the unique selling point, whilst keeping the Frances Cohen signature application of colour and stripes.
HAYLEY LAI
Focussing on non fashion images to inspire her, Hayley’s designs are derived from the most unconventional of muses.
Basing her final collection on transformation and tessellation, which originated from research on an artist called Escher – a mathematical genius. Hayley was intrigued to how his tessellation patterns consisted of the same shape fitting together to create new forms.
Using an Electra origami structure, Hayley experimented how one shape could evolve by being repeated in to a sequence to transform and develop into a geometric character, creating pieces which are beautiful yet tough.
JESS SAYERS
Taking inspiration from experimenting with fresh and individual styles, Jess strives to create minimal yet sophisticated looks that consistently include a feature of distinction. She approaches her work by analysing garments and developing diverse techniques by combining visual design with pattern cutting.
JOHANNA GREENISH
Taking inspiration from the art world, Johanna’s collection explores the effect of folding and unfolding fabric by creating shapes that combine harsh geometric lines with linear curves. The imperfection of the hand-painted fabric with its lack of complete mastery over the final effect allows for something to happen that is unique and individual.
Her collection was nominated for the River Island Gold Award at Graduate Fashion Week 2010 and received fantastic reviews. Since graduating with a First Class BA Hon Degree in Fashion Design Johanna has worked for designers such Michael Vanderham and Roksanda Ilincic.
LAURA MANSELL
Studies of both psychological and visual aesthetics are combined in the design methodologies of Laura Mansell. The idea that identity can be both masked and revealed through garments is core to Laura’s design interests and investigations. Design philosophy is inspired by the ongoing symbiotic relationships that exist between intimate apparel and outerwear design and how these mutually contribute to shaping wearer identity is the ethos that has allowed Laura to produce some truly beautiful pieces.
LICKORISHLATEX
Design label Lickorishlatex have been creating unique fashion accessories and garments from their workshop in the North of England since 2005.
Each item is handmade to the highest quality from a choice of 26 different colours, a made-to-measure service being available for all garments. Designs often encompass beautiful latex appliqués, each individual piece being lovingly applied by hand.
Lickorishlatex pride themselves on both the quality and diversity of their products from their punky ‘skullkadot’ and bone appliqués through to ultra-feminine polkadots, bows and, of course, the famous Lickorishlatex roses!
LUCINDA AILES
Lucinda’s style and love of fashion has always set her apart from the rest; from dressing up as a small child to creating her dream look from a drawing and a piece of fabric.
Completing an Hons fashion degree, at the University for the Creative Arts motivated Lucinda to create her own brand, Lucinda Ailes. Her aim is to style the city women in a chic tailored feel with touches of her own creative flair for colour and that something special.
MELLISA BOYER
A student at Birmingham city university, Mellisa won best evening wear designer at Midlands Young designer of the year awards. The event was an amazing opportunity for Mellissa to showcase her work and to show others what she is capable of, and now she can’t wait to see her collection on the catwalk at this years’ Clothes Show Live!
Nicole Gill Lingerie is a bespoke brand specialising in authentic steel corsetry and luxury lingerie pieces; using elegant silks and laces. All corsets are handmade to exact measurements to ensure that the body is shaped to perfection with a stunning cinched waist.
Each corset is an adaptation of a traditional Victorian corset - modernised to suit the contemporary silhouette, making each wearer feel elegant and beautiful.
All pieces are handmade in the UK.
PAULINAH N. EBOH-SAMPSON
Paulinah N. Eboh- Sampson an up and coming Birmingham based independent fashion designer and creative director for Dancing Dolls clothing.
Dancing Dolls clothing fuses the feisty, empowering relationship between dancer and dance along with the dainty attributes of all types of dolls mixed with creative fashion ideas and notions to produce exclusive casual, evening wear and unique swimwear.
Paulinah is currently working on the A/W 2011 Dancing Dolls collection - 'The beautiful Ugly'.

Rachel Faye Brown creates garments that are light, flowing and full of volume while carrying details that emphasize the female form.
Producing timeless one-off pieces that are beautifully made and delicately embellished is the key the brands success. Continually delivering in both standard and style, every woman needs a Rachel Brown eye catching piece in their wardrobe.

RAVINDER MATHARU
Midlands Young Fahion Designer Award 2010 - Ready to Wear winner, Ravinder Matharu, specialises in designs combining classic menswear with sportswear to form quirky casual wear.
His graduate collection posses this core element and the collection is titled “Working Class Hero” named after the classic song from John Lennon. The lyrics from this song became the inspiration for this collection as I focused on dressing the real man who is trying to achieve his dreams for a better life.
Through this inspiration, Ravinder was able to stretch his “specialism” by making each of the garments designed in the collection to be functional in a working environment.

SHARA JOHNSON
Being a conceptual person, it is communicating ideologies visually and questioning conformities is what draws Shara to fashion. Currently studying a BA(Hons) degree in Fashion Design and Development at the London College of Fashion, she is constantly observing her surroundings for new ideas.
Shara’s Spring/ Summer RTW collection ‘Safarii’ was inspired by summer heat and tropical plants in full bloom as summer is when a woman wants to feel alive and energetic. Using loud colours and print make the collection organic, fresh, and conveys a woman who feels beautiful in the clothes she wears, embracing the enjoyment of life to the fullest.
VICTORIA BRAMWELL
Midlands Young Fahion Designer Award 2010 - Haute Couture & Overall winner, Victoria Bramwell, is a freelance fashion designer born in Milton Keynes and recently relocated to London to fulfill her design career dream.
Victoria has always created clothes for herself and recently started selling to others through online fashion websites. Using bright colours, bold shapes and interesting textures are the intregal elements for making unique, striking garments.
Victoria wants to contine making clothes that have individuality and attention giving people something that stands out from the rest.
